Mismatch: why a Stone Age brain keeps sabotaging a modern life

The single most useful idea in evolutionary psychology is also the one least dependent on its shakier claims: mismatch. Your drives were tuned by a world of scarcity and small groups, and they now run inside a world of engineered abundance and infinite comparison. Sugar, dopamine feeds, and status anxiety are not moral failures. They are ancient machinery firing correctly at the wrong targets — and once you see that, you stop fighting the drive and start redesigning the target.

The lens, stated carefully

The core claim of evolutionary psychology is that the mind is a set of adaptations shaped by selection in ancestral environments, not a general-purpose blank slate. The version worth keeping is narrow and mechanical: for many traits, the environment we were selected for no longer matches the one we live in, and that gap produces predictable dysfunction. Niko Tinbergen gave the sharpest handle on it with supernormal stimuli — an exaggerated version of a natural trigger that hijacks an instinct more powerfully than the real thing ever did. A bird will abandon its own pale eggs to sit on a bigger, brighter fake.

We are the bird. Refined sugar is a supernormal stimulus for a palate evolved to chase rare ripe fruit; pornography and the social feed are supernormal stimuli for drives built around scarce mating and small-group reputation. The instinct is not malfunctioning. It is doing exactly what it was selected to do, in an environment engineered — often deliberately — to overload it.

From explanation to design

The reason this matters operationally is that it moves the intervention off willpower and onto the environment. If a behaviour is a correct response to a supernormal trigger, then removing or reshaping the trigger beats resolving to resist it. This is the same conclusion the predictive-coding and cognitive-sovereignty arguments reach from other directions, which is a good sign: design the room, do not out-discipline the instinct.

It also sharpens how you read customers. Under the marketing language, demand often runs on ancestral drives — status, belonging, safety, the fear of exclusion — and a product that speaks to those honestly lands harder than one that argues features. For an ADHD-shaped mind there is a kinder reading here too: restless novelty-seeking looks like a defect against a desk job, but it is a plausible foraging trait, tuned for a world that rewarded scanning and switching. The trait is not broken; it is mismatched, and mismatch is a design problem, not a character verdict.

A worked mismatch: the phone on the nightstand

Take the most ordinary modern trap and run the lens on it. The phone beside the bed is not one temptation; it is a dense stack of supernormal stimuli aimed at several ancient drives at once. The social feed is a supernormal version of small-group reputation, delivering more social signal in a minute than an ancestral human processed in a day. The notification exploits a threat-detection system tuned for a world where a sudden social cue could genuinely matter for survival. The infinite scroll is a supernormal version of foraging, an environment where the next patch of reward is always one flick away and never runs out.

The willpower framing tells you to have more discipline, which asks the instinct to malfunction on command. It will not, because it is not malfunctioning — it is firing correctly at a trigger engineered to overload it. The design framing works instead on the trigger. The phone leaves the bedroom, so the supernormal stimulus is not physically present to fire the drive at midnight. Notifications go off, so the threat-detector is not pinged by manufactured urgency. The screen goes greyscale, which strips out the supernormal colour the reward system was built to chase. None of this is a moral upgrade; it is removing the exaggerated trigger so the ancient machinery has nothing to lock onto.

The same lens sharpens how you read demand. Under the feature language a customer uses, the real driver is usually one of a handful of ancestral motivations — status, belonging, safety, the fear of being left out — and a product that speaks to the drive honestly lands harder than one that argues specifications at a brain that was never buying on specifications. Mismatch is not only a personal-defence tool; it is a map of what actually moves people, used carefully.

The move is always the same shape: find where an ancient drive is being pulled by a modern supernormal target, and change the target rather than fighting the drive. What you do not do is take the next step, from "this is how the drive evolved" to "this is how things must be" — that is where the tool stops working and the just-so stories begin.

Where evolutionary psychology earns its bad reputation

This field carries real scientific controversy, and honesty requires holding the lens loosely. Three cautions matter.

One: the just-so story problem. Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin's famous critique is that you can invent a plausible adaptive story for almost any trait after the fact, and plausibility is not evidence. Claims about the ancestral environment are hard to test, and a theory that explains every outcome equally well explains none of them in particular. Treat any specific evolutionary "why" as a hypothesis, not a fact.

Two: the naturalistic fallacy. "Evolved" does not mean good, healthy, or inevitable. That a drive is ancient tells you why it is strong, not that you should obey it — the entire point of the mismatch frame is that many evolved responses are now harmful. Using evo-psych to justify a behaviour reverses the argument.

Three: it launders prejudice easily. The field's ugliest use is dressing social bias — especially essentialist claims about sex and behaviour — in the prestige of biology. A confident evolutionary story about how people "naturally" are deserves more scrutiny, not less, precisely because it flatters existing hierarchies. The mismatch lens is valuable; the sweeping claims about human nature are where it goes wrong.

So use mismatch as a design tool: find where an ancient drive is being triggered by a modern supernormal target, and change the target. Just refuse the move from "this evolved" to "this is how things must be" — that is where the science stops and the ideology starts.
